Language
& Climate
In
Nicaragua, 90% of the people speak
Central American Spanish, which, closely
mirrors textbook Spanish. Although
the national language is Spanish, the
number of people studying English
is increasing rapidly and in many
areas finding an English speaking
person is easy. Nicaragua has many
Spanish schools in all major cities
that can have you speaking Spanish
quickly. Because of Spanish’s
similarity to English, the language
is easily learned. In the Eastern
Caribbean area of Nicaragua, the spoken
language is Creole English. There
are also pockets of indigenous peoples
who have their own native languages.
Nicaragua
has two seasons invierno and verano.
Invierno, or “green season”,
takes place between May and October
and Verano or “dry season”
lasts from November till April. During
the green season, the weather is cooler
due to increased precipitation. While
Nicaragua is a tropical climate, most
areas are arid and remain cool due
to wind from both coasts and the many
lakes.
Nicaraguan
Culture
Although
Nicaragua has a large land area, its
population has remained low. The current
population of Nicaragua is approximately
5.5 million most of who live in around
the capital city of Managua. 85% of
the people in Nicaragua are classified
as Mestizos. The Mestizo culture is
a mix of Spanish and indigenous tradition
and culture. Their strong and colorful
culture is highly influenced by European
and Spanish musical and religious
traditions. The Nicaraguan people
are very creative and have many prominent
artists and poets. The people of eastern
Nicaragua were influenced by British
traditions. In this area the way of
life, music, and traditions are similar
to Jamaica, Belize, and the Cayman
Islands.
